Our degrees in Creative Writing and Professional Writing provide a strong foundation of subject-specific knowledge and skills in the first year, preparing you to choose from an exciting range of module options as you progress. You’ll develop and pursue new interests and have the chance to undertake an independent writing final-year project. Our diverse module range allows you to explore innovative approaches to Creative Writing, encouraging you to reflect on the enduring importance of historic literatures as well as contemporary literature’s impact on society and specific communities. You will explore and be encouraged to read and write in many different forms, such as:

• the novel
• short fiction
• flash or micro fictions
• hybrid forms
• poetry
• non-fiction 

These forms span the traditional through to the experimental and enable encounters with important themes, including:

• gender and sexuality
• the environment and climate
• political injustice
• economic inequality
• globalisation

Our degrees are designed to invite you to think creatively, critically, and openly – giving you the supportive and friendly space in which your creative voice can rise, change, and develop over three years. Our seminars and workshops are places in which you’ll find intellectual stimulation and rigour but also warm support and camaraderie. The creative act is often fuelled and developed by encounters with other writers and so, your peers and teachers will be your creative writing community while studying at Bangor. Our workshops and classrooms are spaces in which your unique voice will be nurtured with care and commitment. It’s also a space in which you will learn to confidently critique and help develop the work of your peers.

Many of our modules provide opportunities to choose innovative, creative assessments, which focus on preparing you for the job market and a broad range of fulfilling careers. As a creative writing graduate, you will be in possession of some of the most in-demand skills required by this fast-paced modern job market. As an expert creator, communicator, and critical thinker, you will see how these skills are highly valued in, and transferable to, both traditional and rapidly emerging job markets.

As part of your undergraduate experience, we’re proud to offer regular visits and workshops from expert industry insiders. These sessions provide valuable insight and practical tips about how to transfer your creative talents into fulfilling careers that make best use of your unique skills. We’ve welcomed experts from careers as diverse as publishing and editing through to recently graduated writers working collaboratively with AI to create content for world leading brands. Your creative future is full of possibility and your undergraduate years are the chance to explore where this could lead.

At Bangor, you’ll be part of a lively and caring community with excellent pastoral support. You’ll have opportunities to immerse yourself in writing and reading but also go on theatre visits and field trips, listen and talk to visiting writers, attend research seminars, explore Bangor’s special collections and archives, and to get involved in vibrant student societies and reading groups. You’ll be taught by world-leading subject specialists from day one, and your lecturers and tutors will get to know you and support your through your degree. Alongside lectures, you’ll benefit from small seminar groups, one-to-one project supervision, workshops, and regular drop-in sessions.

As a Creative Writing student, you’ll be actively looking both backwards and forwards in literary time. You’ll have the opportunity to study a range of genres and forms, from classic texts through to contemporary writing. You’ll learn how to navigate and appreciate what has come before, what’s happening now and consider how your writing might respond, deviate, sit in conversation with, or sometimes challenge the texts you will explore.
