About Renewables
With the current climate emergency, and dwindling fossil fuels reserves, it is important that we make a rapid transition towards generating electricity from low carbon, sustainable, and renewable energy sources. One of the biggest sources of electricity generation surrounds us – the ocean. Covering 71% of the Earth’s surface, the ocean has the potential for significant electricity generation, through exploitation of wave energy, tidal energy, and ocean thermal energy resources. As well as having potential to meet much of the UK’s demand for electricity, this is also a high tech globally exportable industry, of which the UK, and Wales, are currently world leaders. Our Engineers are also working on all aspects of renewables research and teaching. Our students regularly undertake placements and internships with large power companies working in the renewables. Our research in solar energy generation and the next generation of solar panels is leading in the field and is a theme running through all our teaching and research.
Our degree programmes are the foundation for careers in many aspects of the low-carbon energy industry.
