About Psychology
The endeavour to understand the human mind and brain presents one of the greatest challenges for science. Our psychological research in areas such as language, cognition, action, emotion, social behaviour, perception, and physical and mental health is vital both to advance our understanding of human behaviour, and to promote the rehabilitation and care of people who suffer as a result of injury or disease.
A PhD level qualification is the highest level of examined study within the field of Psychology. PhD study involves 3 to 4 years full time study or up to 7 years part time study. It is a research intensive programme that will prepare you for a career in academic or industry.
Doctoral study in Psychology will enable you to develop the skills required to be an independent researcher in the psychological sciences. Alongside developing your research portfolio, PhD training can offer the opportunity to develop other academic skills, such as teaching in higher education institutions.
A PhD programme will train you in how to contribute to and disseminate academic knowledge at the most advanced levels. This can include specialisation in cutting-edge research and/or the development of innovative psychological tools and interventions, and the production of publishable work of an internationally excellent quality.
